Present Continuous versus Present Simple

We use Present Continuous in the following situations:

  1. The action is happening at the time of speaking. It is not finished.
  2. To say that somebody is in the middle of doing something.
  3. To express the change in the usual way of things (getting, becoming, starting, beginning, changing, improving).
  4. With adverbs of periods around now (today, this week, this year)

We Use Present Simple in the following situations:

  1. To talk about things in general
  2. To say that something happens all the time
  3. To point to the fact that is true in general
  4. To state how often we do things
  5. To express your attitude to what is happening ( I think, I believe, I suggest)
