 IROQUOIS

HISTORY

Iroquois and  Algonquin are the two groups of first tribes lived in the Woodlands or Great Lakes region of the United States (New York, Oklahoma) and Canada (Ontario and Quebec). Iroquois was the most powerful tribe in America. Nowadays, there only 10 % of Iroquis left, but their beliefs still live on.

EVERY DAY ACTIVITY

Iroquois lived in longhouses for up to 30 families. Longhouses were built near rivers and were made of trees. Longhouses had a round roof and hole on it for the smoke to come out. To protect their homes, Iroquois built walls of wooden sticks or poles around their villages.

Iroquois clothes were made from tanned deerskin. The men wore leggings and long breechcloths while the women wore long skirts. Both men and women wore deerskin shirts or blouses and soft shoes made of leather called moccasins.

Iroquois families were not large. Everybody in the family had his/her own job to do. Iroquois men made tools. The men hunted wild game including deer, rabbit, turkey, bear, and beaver. Some meat was eaten fresh, and some were (was) dried and stored for later. Hunting animals was not only important for meat, but for other parts of the animal as well. The Iroquois used the skin for making clothing and blankets, the bones for tools, and the tendons for sewing.

Iroquois women were excellent farmers, took care of homes and children, made baskets for storage, made fish nets for fishing, made pottery of clay and cooked as well. Iroquois did not ride horses, they walked.

TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS

All Iroquois respected nature, as it was their source of life. They believed in spirits. They divided them into good and bad ones. The powerful creator was named the “Great Spirit”.

Iroquois used symbols to send secret meanings (pictograms or ideagrams). A butterfly symbolized transformation. An arrow symbolized protection and defense. A drum was used to interact with a higher power the Great Spirit. A dancer symbolized a celebration or ritual dance.
