For comparing things and actions, we use comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs respectively, as well as comparative constructions and comparative adverbs. Please see below.
1. ADJECTIVES. We compare things using adjectives in comparative and superlative forms.
Here is a list of two-syllable adjectives ending in er, ly, y, w.
ER: eager (нетерпеливый, стремящийся), clever
LY: friendly, early, daily, costly, crassly (несуразный), silly (глупый)
Y: happy, bloody, ashy (пепельный, бледный), airy (воздушный, просторный, легкий)
W: narrow, sallow (желтоватый, болезненный), callow (неопытный, неоперевшийся), fallow (залежашийся, a fallow land), hollow (пустой, пустотелый).
2. ADVERBS. We compare actions using adverbs in comparative and superlative forms.
A few of the comparatives and superlatives of English adjectives and adverbs do not follow the usual pattern. Here is a list of common exceptions.
Positive | Comparative | Superlative |
bad | worse | worst |
badly | worse | worst |
far(distance) | farther | farthest |
far(extent) | further | furthest |
good | better | best |
ill | worse | worst |
late | later | latest or last |
less | lesser | least |
little(amount) | less | least |
many | more | most |
much | more | most |
well | better | best |
4. COMPARATIVE ADVERBS. We compare things and actions using comparative adverbs “too” and “enough”.
